Below is an EXACT copy of the letter from Richard Wilde regarding sophomore portfolio review. I have awesomely highlighted certain parts of the letter based on questions I've been asked recently.

Seriously, you're all in COLLEGE and if you can't figure this stuff out (good design work and typography aside) you should go back to high school or something.

Dear Student:

For the final week of the spring 2010 academic semester, there will be no studio classes, Monday, April 26 through Friday, April 30, 2010. Note that your Humanities and Art History courses will still be in session. Please note that on Monday, May 4, classes will be in session.

All students will be required to attend a MANDATORY Sophomore Portfolio Review on Monday, April 26, 2010. This review is a departmental requirement that all students must attend in order to be admitted into the third year.

The primary intention of this review is to confirm that your work meets the standards of the department. Its purpose includes identifying and advising students whose work is less than satisfactory and to correct problems and encourage improvement. Students who do not pass the review run the risk of repeating second year or attending summer school. Also, this review is to help identify students who are excelling at the sophomore level, and who can be considered for invitations to special weekend workshops with luminaries in the field, as well as possible scholarship consideration.

Criteria for judging scholarships will be based on:
a) Level of portfolio excellence presented at review
b) Teacher recommendation(s)
c) Grade point average

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE REVIEW:
A) Your work will be reviewed by a panel of faculty judges. Students are NOT present during the review.
B) After the review, you will receive a numerical assessment by the judges indicating your level of achievement.
You will find a completed review form inside your portfolio indicating either:
1). Top Percentile (Exemplary Work)
2). High Level of Achievement
3). Pass
4). Unsatisfactory

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS:

A) Submit your best samples of work from each of your studio courses (not including Computers in the Studio) taken during the fall and spring term, creating the best possible portfolio that gives evidence of growth and commitment. Graphic Design majors have the option of omitting their Advertising work. The department asks that students submit a bound book that consists of work only from your sophomore year. This is all that is required. Do not submit work from any freshman studio requirements taken during the sophomore year. If you are including 3-D work, it should be photographed and included in your bound book. What is most important is that your portfolio reflects knowledge of concept, design, typography as well as competent execution skills. If you wish, to augment your portfolio, you may submit an additional book that was already completed in one of your classes.

B) Your book should be presented in a finished manner and clearly labeled with your name PRINTED on the outside of the book or inside flap. Either your Basic Graphic Design instructor or Basic Typographic Design instructor will help in developing your portfolio.

C) You must submit the following forms:
1. Sophomore Portfolio Review Personal Information Form. As indicated on the form, a PHOTOGRAPH IS MANDATORY in order to be reviewed.
2. Sophomore Portfolio Review Evaluation Form
3. Sophomore Portfolio Reviewer Form. You must submit (10) copies of this form, completing only the top portion.

These forms MUST accompany your portfolio on the day of the review. Portfolios submitted without forms will not be reviewed. NO EXCEPTIONS! Additional forms can be downloaded from your Mac via the following method:

Step 1: Go to "Finder".
Step 2: Go to "Shared".
Step 3: Go to "Teacher Server".
Step 4: Go to "Standard Teacher Server".
Step 5: Go to "Wilde" folder.
Step 6: Go to "Sophomore Review".

D) Submit a copy of an unofficial transcript with the above forms.

E) DO NOT tape, staple, glue and/or enclose these forms onto/into anything, in any manner. Simply place the forms INSIDE your portfolio case or bound book.

F) PORTFOLIOS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED UNLESS ALL FORMS ARE SUBMITTED.

Drop-off Date/Time:    Monday, April 26, 2010, Between 8:30am-9am, NO LATER.
Drop off Location:     Art Directors Club, Inc, 106 West 29th Street.
Pick-up Date/Time:    Monday, April 26, 2010, between 7:00pm-7:30pm,

Well, as you all know—class was canceled on Monday for the MLK holiday.

Because of this—my expectation for this Monday (January 25) is not so much that you do anything additional but rather that the bring you bring in is exhaustive. That you have done A LOT of work.

I want to see comprehensive sketches for lots of pages for all four books. Beyond that, I expect that your sketches are not only about visually understanding this project but also that your CONCEPT is strong and consistent throughout your design.

I can't wait to see everyone and their work on Monday.

BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP — REVISED TIME & LOCATION

After some begging on my part, Ingrid has been kind enough to give us two options on Saturday to participate in the bookbinding workshop:

Option 1

9:00 am - 12 noon

Option 2

1:30pm - 4:30 pm

NOTE: Both workshops will take place in ROOM 304 (still in the main building) and not 605

These times and the room number apply to both this Saturday (Nov 14) as well as next (Nov 21).

I expect that with such extraordinary flexibility, everyone will be able to attend.

As a reminder, taking a bookbinding workshop is mandatory. Should you not be able to attend, it will be your responsibility to coordinate directly with Ingrid and participate in another workshop. I recommend that you do this as soon as possible as upcoming projects as well as your end of year portfolio will require bookbinding knowledge and capability.

Typographic Burger

I found myself in a Wendy's in Budd Lake, NJ on Friday night and while ordering I noticed this sign to my left. I asked an employee about it and she said that it was in reference to a very specific burger which people asked about a lot. Instead of always explaining what was on it—they had this little sign made so they could point to it when people asked.

I thought it was brilliant — in a 'bad', automatic, naive kind of way.

To me—it captures something that 'trained' graphic designers strive to achieve. It's immediate, it's familiar, and kind of funny...to my eyes anyway.

Very nice work for the first week. I think many of you are beginning to plya, experiment, and push the boundaries of what these posters 'might be' in very exciting ways.

Keep working hard and challenging yourself to not just bring in something but rather work you're really happy with.

Really nice work today. I'm happy with what everyone brought in. Ian was really impressed.

For next week, make sure you you bring in your favorite design series ON books. Go to the Strand Bookstore and buy 5 books of the exact size you need them.

Every book MUST be 6"x9" (verticle). It's unacceptable to bring in a book with incorrect dimensions.

Design a spine. The thickness is less important than the other dimensions but design your spine around the books you get.

Also, bring the other options you have to hang up so we can talk about them. You have done good explorations so far, but everything you bring in must exist as a part of a series.

Your mission is to impress. Your presentation of these books is key. Peter will be back next week.

So Now that we had a crit and we cleared up a few details, you guys should be on your way. For next week, 10/19, you guys should be bringing in the same thing. Remember... think about your ideas. SIMPLIFY. You guys are on a great track analyizing these essays but strip down your idea for every story into one line if you can. Then use your type and non literal (figurative) image to communicate that. Simple Simple Simple = harder. When you get to that wall, you know you're about to come to something interesting. Remember, everything means something.

Please bring your work in on the correct format with an outline or cut out. Bring in as much as you can so we have something to talk about. Come prepared to explain your ideas.

Oh, and go to a museum if you can. It's going to rain this weekend I think so it's a good opportunity.

CLASS OVERVIEW

Hi guys, welcome to the class.

This class will introduce and explore graphic design in terms of three essential elements: Idea, Content, and Form. Assignments will require you to be both Reactive and Proactive in your approach as well as challenge you to work within shifting sets of Parameters. Through this Process you will develop and refine your understanding of visual communication, design technique, and typography. Assignments will vary between the experimental and the more formal.

Through a combination of lecture, critique, presentation, and discussion—we will address the question: What is graphic design and why does it matter?

It is expected that you take this class seriously. This means attendance, punctuality, finishing all projects (and all aspects of projects) on-time, and in-class participation are merely the most basic requirements.

Grades will not be given on a per project basis but rather be based on a cumulative, end of semester evaluation.
